LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. — The 2013 Air Power Over Hampton Roads Open House and Air Show, scheduled for May 3-5, has been cancelled. Driven by the dual threat of operating under a continuing resolution and a potential sequestration, U.S. Air Force leadership at all levels are proactively implementing near-term actions to minimize impact to readiness and our people while protecting wartime operations.

“The Air Force has to consider the fiscal challenges affecting the Department of Defense and the nation,” said Col. Korvin Auch, 633rd Air Base Wing commander. “We’re taking prudent steps now in order to be good stewards of taxpayer resources while focusing on maintaining readiness.”

The decision to cancel the air show and open house at Langley Air Force Base was not easy considering the show’s popularity and the Hampton Road area’s support of the military.

“We sincerely appreciate the sustained support and understanding from our service members, their families, the American public and specifically our local Hampton Roads supporters and friends, through these trying fiscal times,” said Auch. “We cannot continue functioning as the world’s most capable Air Force without this support.

“I believe that opening our gates to the general public is periodically necessary to demonstrate modern weapon systems and capabilities, to promote positive community and international relations, to showcase our Airmen and to support Air Force recruiting and retention,” said Auch. “For that reason, my team and I are already looking at future years where we can once again showcase Air Power Over Hampton Roads to the community in which we live and work.”

No dates for future Air Power Over Hampton Roads have been set.

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. – The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s premier demonstration team, has released their 2013 show season schedule and will headline the 2013 AirPower Over Hampton Roads airshow and open house scheduled for May 3 through 5, 2013 at Langley Air Force Base, Va.
The Thunderbirds perform for people all around the world, displaying the pride, precision and professionalism of American Airmen. In every hour-long demonstration, the team combines years of training and experience with an attitude of excellence to showcase what the Air Force is all about.
The sharply choreographed, drill-style ground ceremony kicks off the demonstration by showcasing the attention to detail and esprit de corps that defines our enlisted members. As the jets take to the skies and fly only a few feet from wingtip to wingtip, the crowd gets a glimpse of the awesome skills and capabilities that all fighter pilots must possess. The solo pilots integrate their own loud and proud routine, exhibiting some of the maximum capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon – a highly-maneuverable, compact, multi-role fighter aircraft.
The air show is slated to host a mix of military and civilian performances and static displays. Like previous open houses, the 2013 air show will be kicked-off the Friday prior to the event. The AirPower Over Hampton Roads schedule, including times and acts, will be released as the event draws closer.

The Langley open house, “AirPower over Hampton Roads,” has been scheduled for May 3 through 5, 2013 at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

The air show is slated to host a mix of military and civilian performances and static displays, and in previous years, has hosted demonstrations by numerous national performers, such the Air Force premier demonstration team, the Thunderbirds, said A.J. Gross, deputy air show director.

All air-show performers attend the International Convention of Air Shows, hosted by the International council of Air Shows, to set schedule for the 2013 season. The International Council of Air Shows held its first convention in 1967, and since then has gathered the air show community every year to exchange ideas, conduct business and begin the process of planning the upcoming season.

The 2012 ICAS Convention will be held on December 10 through 13 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Las Vegas.

Once the convention has concluded and the 2013 schedules are set, Langley AFB will be able to formulate an itinerary of the 2013 show.

Like previous open houses, the 2013 air show will be kicked-off the Friday prior to the event. The gates are scheduled to open at 5 p.m., and will include a concert, a night air show, and a fireworks display.

Saturday and Sunday the gates will open at 9 a.m. and the show is slated to start at 11 a.m. The performances will last all day, concluding at 5 p.m.

To the Air Force, AirPower over Hampton Roads is a way to give back to the local community for their continued support of Langley’s missions and operations, said Gross.

“The air show provides a great opportunity to give the surrounding community a chance to the capabilities of the world’s greatest air force,” said Gross. “It’s important to see what we do here at Langley AFB.”
